Montgomery GI Bill Application Process

GI Bill Benefits
If the student never used the GI Bill benefits before or if he/she is still Active Duty:

- The student must complete VA Form 22-1990, Application for Education Benefits. The InovaTech VA Certifying Official can provide the student with this form. After the form is completed and signed, the student must bring it to the Admissions Counselor.
If the student is Active Duty and wants to use the GI Bill benefits instead of the Army Tuition Assistance, he/she will need to have the appropriate Education Service Officer or Command representative complete and sign Section II of the VA Form 22-1990.
In addition, the student should speak to a counselor in the corresponding Voluntary Education Services Office to determine if he/she is eligible to participate in the GI-Bill Buy-up program before starting using the GI Bill. It could be worth up to an extra $5,400 in benefits.

If the student is a Veteran, a copy of the Form DD-214 Discharge Paperwork must be submitted to InovaTech together with the application. This form is needed to prove high school graduation.

If the student is a member of the Selective Reserve he/she may need to include a copy of DD Form 2384-1, Notice of Basic Eligibility which was received by his/her unit when he/she became eligible for the MGIB-SR.

I. If the student used the VA benefits before the Form VA-1995, Request for Change of Program or Place of Training must be completed, and signed. A copy of the signed form must be brought to the InovaTech Certifying Official. The Certifying Official can provide the student with this form.

The InovaTech Certifying Official will mail the student’s application along with the additional paperwork to the VA regional office in Decatur, GA at the following mailing address:
VA Regional Office
P.O. Box 100022
Decatur, GA 30031-7022
This will expedite the process.

Within 4-8 weeks the student should receive a declaration of eligibility and a letter explaining the VA GI Bill benefits. The students must keep in mind that it is not uncommon to get a letter from the VA requesting more information. In this case, the students will have to answer the VAs requests to be determined eligible and complete the process. Once the students have begun receiving the benefit checks (Direct Deposit), the students will have to complete the Vas Web Automated Verification of Eligibility (WAVE) each month to continue receiving the monthly benefit payments.

The WAVE is a simple process that requires students to either log-on to the VA WAVE website or call their toll-free number at 1-888-GIBILL-1. It only takes a couple of minutes, but the students will not get their monthly payment until they do. These simple steps will lead to over $35,000 in education benefits.
